Golf Performance

What is Golf Performance?

Dr. Meghan Helwig utilizes the TPI Medical Assessment along with various other techniques to identify and address the underlying cause of pain and/or limitations in movement that can affect a client’s golf swing. Not only does Dr. Helwig want to help get people out of pain, she wants to help golfers maximize both performance and longevity in sport. Unfortunately, the research suggests that half of all serious golfers have had some sort of physical issue impact the quality and amount of golf they play.

Why Should You Care?

The body is one of the key factors when it comes to your golf game. If your body is not at its optimal level then your swing and game will suffer. A TPI screen combined with Dr. Helwig’s other techniques can more precisely identify what physical limitations may be holding you back. Whether that is an old injury, limitations in rotation, tight hip flexors, weak glutes, or possibly a combination of things; these can all affect your connection to the club and striking of the ball. For example, if your hips are tight, limiting your ability to achieve the best position in your backswing, the body must compensate in order to get back into position to strike the ball. Dr. Helwig always says the better the athlete the better the compensator. But over time these compensations can start to break down the body, decrease your efficiency and power along with increasing the risk of injury.

How It Works:

All of these factors can be addressed by a TPI Screen/Evaluation. Dr. Helwig will take you through a comprehensive assessment in order to identify limitations which could be a factor in the golf swing such as flexibility, stability, and strength. From here. Dr Helwig will create a plan with golf specific exercises and treatment to address the findings. Each player has a unique body and history, which means their swing and exercise prescription must be tailored to them.

A TPI Screen/Evaluation combined with Dr. Helwig’s other techniques can get you set up with the most specific exercises for your unique impairments to optimize your swing and get you playing your best. This has been proven in recent years with 25 of the top 30 players in the world being advised by a TPI certified expert.

At the end of the day, we all want to play better golf. Dr. Helwig can help you achieve that with “assessing, not guessing.” Please reach out so she can unlock your true potential!

Why I Understand When Others May Not:

If you didn’t know, golf is one of Dr. Helwig’s passions. WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Formal Intake: History – old injuries, surgeries, traumas, stressors, lifestyle, habits
  • TPI assessment: 16 screens used to assess the movements required by each body part for your golf swing

Once the limitations are identified and analyzed with the golf swing, Dr Helwig will then go into looking at the restrictions to find out the underlying cause of it. She utilizes the selective functional movement assessment (SFMA) along with Neurokinetic Testing (NKT) to reveal if it’s a true mobility (joint/tissue issue) or if it is a brain/connection/coordination issue that needs to be retrained for proper movement.

After the underlying cause is found, Dr. Helwig can use various modalities and techniques to specifically treat such as Active Release Techniques (ART), instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), cupping, flossing, Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy and red light. Then she will create a golf specific exercise program to address the specific findings and reinforce improved movement patterns that will carry over to your golf swing.
